Artist Statement

I believe creativity is an innate capacity. It needs to be nurtured. The simplest way to do that is to be intentional about identifying everyday beauty in ordinary places. Honed further, this becomes a practice, a way of approaching life.

As a visual artist, this practice begins with the line. I try to convey the look and feel of what I am remembering, reflecting on and observing. A visual gestalt, an essence so to speak. I expand on that through collage, working both digitally and with physical materials, layering until the work holds more than the line alone.

Those fragments are rarely neutral. Images drawn from various sources as well as those created by hand, come together to express the sense of a time, a  place, the people who were there. Layering the images into the work is a way of layering memory: each piece I add is a story that connects me back to a self, a place, people…

Through my work, I am pursuing a question of connection: to self, to the outside world, to people, to place, to objects. I make this work to trace that connection for myself, and to encourage others to do the same.
